  • Acquire the transcriptional and compositional skills needed to write clearly, accurately, and creatively.
  • Engage with a diverse range of genres and high-quality texts that inspire imagination and support authorial voice.

We aspire for every child to see themselves as a writer - ASPIRATIONAL in their creativity, BELIEVING in their ability to communicate, COMMITTED to refining their craft, and eager to DISCOVER new ways to express their ideas.

  • Uses high-quality texts as models to inspire writing and demonstrate features of different genres.
  • Teaches pupils to plan, draft, revise, and publish their writing, building stamina, accuracy, and independence.
  • Embeds explicit teaching of spelling, punctuation, and grammar, ensuring pupils apply these skills confidently in their writing.
  • Provides meaningful writing opportunities linked to cross-curricular learning, allowing pupils to apply writing skills in a range of contexts.
  • Encourages oracy - discussion, debate, drama, and storytellingto strengthen vocabulary choices and develop clarity of expression.
  • Supports pupils who require extra help through targeted interventions and scaffolded teaching approaches.

Handwriting at Sharp Lane Primary School

At Sharp Lane, we encourage all of our children to take pride in their work. Cursive writing is more than just a handwriting exercise — it’s a valuable life skill that supports a child’s overall learning and development. We use the Letter-Join scheme throughout school to support with this. All teachers model age-appropriate handwriting and this consistency is reflected on our display boards and worksheets.

Research shows that writing in cursive activates different parts of the brain compared to typing or printing. As children learn to form each flowing letter, they strengthen fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and memory. This helps improve focus and encourages neat, consistent writing. Cursive writing helps children understand how letters connect to form words, which in turn supports spelling, reading, and comprehension skills.

Spelling at Sharp Lane Primary School

Strong spelling skills are a key part of becoming a confident reader and writer. Good spelling helps children express their ideas clearly and accurately - and builds pride in their work. As children learn to spell, they recognise patterns, sounds, and meanings within words. This strengthens reading fluency, boosts vocabulary, and supports writing across all subjects.

To support regular spelling lessons, all children have access to Spelling Shed, an interactive online platform that turns spelling practice into a fun game. Spelling Shed helps children learn through play, repetition and friendly competition - all while developing lifelong spelling confidence.
