Intent

At Sharp Lane Primary School, we recognise that Art & Design is vital to children’s development and plays an important role in daily life. Our intent is to inspire pupils to be aspirational by exploring the creative world around them and understanding how art influences our environment, emotions, and culture. We believe that Art is a powerful form of self-expression, allowing children to communicate ideas and experiences in meaningful ways. We want our pupils to believe in their creativity and feel confident in expressing themselves through art that inspires, engages, and challenges them.

Implementation

Our Art and Design curriculum ensures children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent, and create their own works of art, craft, and design. We implement this by:

•      Teaching a carefully planned sequence of lessons that build upon prior learning and develop artistic knowledge and skills progressively.
•      Providing opportunities for children to explore and commit to developing techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, collage, and digital media.
•      Encouraging children to experiment, explore, and take creative risks, valuing the process as much as the finished product.
•      Introducing pupils to a wide range of artists, designers, and craftspeople from different times, cultures, and backgrounds to broaden their artistic understanding.
•      Embedding the language of art through discussion, reflection, and evaluation of their own work and that of others.
•      Using sketchbooks to record observations, plan ideas, and reflect on personal artistic journeys.
