What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding children is defined in the statutory guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018 as:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment
  • Preventing impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development
  • Ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children have the best outcomes

Sharp Lane Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and expects all staff, governors and visitors to share this commitment. All adults who work in school have a responsibility to read and understand all safeguarding policies and to act within accordance of the school’s Safeguarding and Child Protection policy at all times. All adults are also expected to read the DfE booklet: Keeping Children Safe in Education 2021

In accordance with statutory guidance, all staff regularly attend Child Protection training and are aware of the procedures they must follow if they have concerns for the welfare of a child in school.

All staff are trained in evacuation and lockdown procedures annually and these are practised with the children throughout the academic year.

To Safeguard all children’s welfare in school, robust Safer Recruitment Guidelines are followed with all staff and regular volunteers undergo DBS checks to assess their suitability to work with children.

The Designated Safeguarding Team will share information with other agencies if we have a concern about your child’s welfare and safety. We would usually inform you of this beforehand. Equally, other agencies may share Safeguarding information with us about your child. We pride ourselves on knowing not just about our children’s learning, but about them and their families as individuals and valued members of our school and local community. We are part of and work closely with the Rothwell Cluster to offer additional external support to families.
