History

Intent
At Sharp Lane, History inspires curiosity about the world and how it has developed. Children aspire to understand past societies and explore how people lived, learning how their actions shaped the way we live our lives today. Our curriculum encourages pupils to believe in their ability to investigate, ask questions, and develop historical knowledge. With commitment and a genuine desire to learn, they build chronological understanding and strong communication skills. They make connections across different periods and with the history of their own local community, using these insights to engage in thoughtful discussions.

Implementation
Through the National Curriculum 2014 framework, History at Sharp Lane:

  •     Engages pupils through exciting, enquiry-led lessons.
  •     Begins each lesson with a key learning question.
  •     Uses recap to revisit key concepts and prior knowledge, building progressively on what has already been taught.
  •     Develops chronological understanding and cross-period comparisons.
  •     Places strong emphasis on historical vocabulary.
  •     Promotes enquiry, investigation, interpretation, and deeper-level thinking.
  •     Uses primary and secondary sources critically to explore reliability.
  •     Links learning to the history of the local community.
  •     Encourages pupils to become historians through analysis, discussion, and debate.
  •     Strengthens co-operation and communication skills.

Impact
