Personal, Social, Health and Economic education and RSHE

Intent

At Sharp Lane, PSHE education inspires diversity, respect for British values, healthy lifestyles, cultural awareness, personal growth, and emotional and physical development. Children are encouraged to explore their dreams and goals, build positive relationships, and maintain a strong sense of wellbeing through the PSHE framework. Our curriculum follows the Jigsaw Scheme of Learning, which offers a mindful and progressive approach to PSHE and Health & Wellbeing. It brings together personal, social, and health education, emotional literacy, social skills, and spiritual development into one comprehensive programme.

Weekly lessons, supported by engaging teaching resources, enable teachers to tailor learning to the needs of their class and foster meaningful relationships with pupils — getting to know them as unique individuals and nurturing their personal and social growth.

Implementation

Through the National Curriculum (2014) framework, PSHE at Sharp Lane is delivered through:

  • A whole-school approach – promoting a strong sense of belonging and community through assemblies, end-of-puzzle celebrations, and whole-school displays that showcase learning outcomes.

  • British Values are embedded and promoted through the use of the Jigsaw Learning Charter, introduced at the beginning of every PSHE lesson.

  • Mindful practice is embedded in every lesson, supporting children’s ability to regulate emotions, focus attention, and reflect on their learning.

  • Differentiation and inclusivity ensure that lessons meet the needs of all learners, celebrating diversity and individuality within the school community.

  • Cross-curricular links are made wherever possible, connecting PSHE themes to wider school priorities such as wellbeing, equality, and safeguarding.

Impact

By the time pupils leave Sharp Lane, they will:

  • Have developed the knowledge, skills, and attributes to manage their lives effectively — both now and in the future.

  • Demonstrate confidence, empathy, and respect for others, embracing diversity and British values.

  • Show an understanding of healthy lifestyles, including physical and mental wellbeing.

  • Be able to form positive relationships and make informed, safe choices.

  • Understand and manage their emotions effectively, showing resilience and self-awareness.

  • Be prepared to take their place as responsible, caring citizens in a diverse and ever-changing world.

Through PSHE, our children leave Sharp Lane equipped with the emotional intelligence, social skills, and confidence to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.
