Religious Education
Intent
At Sharp Lane Primary School, we aspire to nurture thoughtful dialogue and understanding so that pupils can participate positively in our diverse society, enriched by many religions, beliefs and world views. With a strong commitment to meaningful and engaging enquiry, we encourage pupils to discover how different beliefs and perspectives address questions of meaning, purpose, value, and how they shape morality, identity and diversity. Through exploring both religious and non-religious approaches to life, we empower pupils to believe in their ability to think deeply, ask life’s ‘big questions,’ and form their own informed and respectful viewpoints.
Implementation
At Sharp Lane Primary School, Religious Education (RE) follows the ‘Believing and Belonging’ Leeds Agreed Syllabus, focusing on Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. Our teaching is also guided by the EYFS Framework and the National Curriculum, ensuring progression, inclusion and a strong foundation from Early Years through to Key Stage 2.
- Planning units around central ‘big questions’ that promote curiosity, reflection and enquiry;
- Encouraging pupils to aspire, believe and discover through meaningful dialogue and exploration of diverse world views;
- Delivering high-quality teaching using stories, artefacts, visitors and real-life experiences;
- Recognising and celebrating religious festivals and world events through assemblies and themed activities;
- Enriching learning with visits to places of worship and opportunities for community engagement.
Impact
By the time pupils leave Sharp Lane Primary School, the impact of Religious Education (RE) enables them to:
- Develop a secure understanding of a range of religions, beliefs, values and traditions;
- Recognise how faith and belief can shape morality, identity and personal values;
- Confidently discuss world religions, beliefs and festivals with curiosity and respect;
