Year 5

Spring Term

In maths, we have been learning about multiples. A multiple is the product of one number multiplied by another. For example a multiple of 6 is 42. A multiple of 8 is 64. We have also been learning about factors. A factor is a whole number that you multiply by another to make a product. For example a factor of 18 is 3. Another factor of 18 is 6.

In guided reading, we are reading The Jungle Book. At the moment we are looking at interpreting and inferring. This means we have been using clues in the text to read between the lines. We have encountered some new vocabulary this week including - bristle, overlooked and reckless.

In science, we have been investigating asexual reproduction and have been exploring whether the roots or the stems of a plant grow the fastest. We have also learnt about runners, tubers and bulbs as well.

Our amazing journey

Our amazing work in Year 5!

In English, we have linked our writing to our topic work. At the moment we are writing a letter to well known housing developer, to persuade them to reconsider their plans to build near a nature reserve. In Year 5 we are concerned that this will have an negative impact on the percentages of wilderness in the UK.

In our topic work, we created mindmaps based on David Attenborough's documentary A Life on our Planet.

In science, we have been disecting plants and learning about different types of birds in the UK.

In guided reading we have been reading The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.

In maths we have been multiplying and dividing by 10,100 and 1000 and using our skills to convert measurements.

Our learning

We kicked our topic off by stepping into the shoes of a botanist. We dissected a flower and then created some botanical illustrations. We also drew and explained lifecycles of a flowering plant using our knowledge.
