Spring Term Journey
LUFC Project - Year 5 - Spring to Summer Term 2021
A group of our year 5 children took part in a 12 week project based of Mental Wellbeing and becoming Sports Ambassadors. Throughout this project the children developed team building skills, confidence, leadership skills and learnt ways to further support our mental health and wellbeing as well as our physical health.
During the project, the children were very lucky to have a zoom meeting with Adam Forshaw where they asked him several questions about how he copes with different aspects of being a footballer. Please follow the link below to watch the highlights of this.
Well done to those children who were part of this project. You made us very proud!
Mental Health Wellbeing Week
Connecting with nature not only improves our physical health but our mental health too. Research has found many benefits to connecting with nature for our mental health, including:
*feeling less stressed or angry;
* increasing self esteem and self-confidence;
*improving concentration and attention;
*encouraging participation in physical activities; and
*increasing social contact.
For Mental Health Awareness Week, we visited the school garden. We spent time looking at what was around us. We discussed our senses. We then drew pictures of nature.

We have utilised our outdoor space in our learning this week! We have also been completing lots of active learning. For example, we competed in relay races to answer questions on our class novel! See pictures below....
Today we took part in a multi-skills festival provided by Escapesports. We had lots of fun taking parts in lots of different activities and events. These are the pictures from the festival.
Hope everyone is well and is staying safe. Thank you for everyone's hard work with the home learning. We really appreciate everyone's efforts.
This term in Art, we are creating a collage of a human heart!
We began our topic by researching famous collage artists and looked at features of the collages we liked and thought about how we could use these ideas in our own masterpieces!!
Here is us experimenting with different textures using a texture wall. We will incorporate our favourite textures and designs in our heart collages next week!
During our 'WOW day', Year 5 helped surgeons by performing surgery on a patient. They all did a fantastic job and repaired the body so that all organs were in the correct place in the body. At the end of the day, all surgeons had to take a surgical exam. All surgeons passed their graduation with flying colours.
Here are our 'Surgeons of the year'!
We have been enjoying Sharp Lane's weekly PE challenges.
This week the challenge was 'how many squat jumps can you do in 30 seconds?'
Our current record is 32!
Challenge: Can you beat the record?....It is harder than it looks....
Year 5 Christmas Song
We had a fantastic crafts day! We painted calendars, decorated wreaths and stars and completed Makaton actions to our Year song 'Rudolf the Red Nose Day.'
Stay tuned for our Makaton song.....
New Learning Alert
We have been very busy since we have been back at school. We have taken part in numerous activities including art days, inter-house competitions and lots of fun topic activities!
Children in Need
For Children in Need, we participated in fun sporting activities. We competed against other classes in Year 5. We also dressed up to raise money for Children in Need. To continue with our competition, we took part in a zoom quiz!
For our Mayan topic, we designed and created fantastic headdresses. From our topic lessons, we discovered that rulers of each city wore a headdress (some were even taller than them). We used our knowledge of the rulers, to carefully select materials and paints for our headdresses.
We have consolidated our place value knowledge and have worked on addition and subtraction skills. After half term, we completed a unit on statistics.
We have written a range of genres including: non-chronological reports about rainforests, myths and an informal letter. We have looked carefully at different features for each genre and worked on these in the sequence of lessons following up to the big write.
In Year 5 we have been looking at adverts. We created our own chocolate bar adverts. We used our reading book 'The Chocolate Tree' for inspiration.
We created some fab ideas and even sent them to Cadburys world. Hopefully our ideas will be coming to a supermarket shelf real soon!
Take a look at our work....
This half term, we are going on a journey to meet a tribe! We will be discovering information about this tribe and researching their achievements!
Homework will be handed out on Monday and collected in on Friday. There will be a spelling test at the end of each week.
Reading Book and Record
Please ensure you send your child to school with their reading book and record each day.
Your child must come to school with a water bottle each day. They should then take it home and wash it ready for the following school day.
PE will take place every Tuesday for all Year 5 classes. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on this day. They will stay in PE kit all day and do not need to bring their uniform.
