English

In English, in Year 5,  we’ve been learning about speech and how to correctly use it in writing. We did some fun drama to act out speech and how people have said certain things using expression. Also, we learnt how important it is to punctuate correctly.

The Law Of The Jungle

Now this is the Law of the Jungle — as old and as true as the sky; And the Wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the Wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk the Law runneth forward and back —
For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

The Jungle Book, studying deforestation, looking at life cycles and trying to make our planet a better place.

On our journey, we have had so much fun. We have been reading Animals of Farthing Wood, learnt about the layers of the rainforest and the effects of deforestation.

We have had lots of fun learning a new sport -lacrosse. We have been learning how to hold the lacrosse stick, travel and scoop up the ball.

This week, we have been learning about solute, solvent and solution. The solute is the product that the solvent dissolves. Water is also known as a solvent because it can dissolve almost any material better than any other liquid.

In english, we have  been doing an acrostic poem about the Rainforest. We also have been going to other year 5 to make a performance about our acrostic Poem.

On the 5th of November, people celebrate bonfire night. It's also known as Guy Fawkes night, because it is marking the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot. That is when 13 men including Guy Fawkes plotted to blow up the Parliament. It is dangerous, so we put together some tips to follow when using fireworks and/or sprinklers.Stand as far back as possible. Make sure you remind your parents to buy CE marked fireworks. Never touch fireworks.

In maths, we have been studying column addition and subtraction, also we have been focusing on showing our working out.
When learning we noticed we also are focusing on 4 digits. Lots of the questions were very hard such as 37,185 - 14,725.
After a while, the equations were easier than ever, as we gained a better understanding of this method.

Rodley Nature Reserve

Year 5 have had lots of fun at Rodley Nature Reserve! We went on a guided walk around the Reserve and learnt about the history of the area, change of land use over time and compared the river to the canal. We visited bird hides, different wetland habitats, dragonfly conservation area and wildflower meadows.

We then went pond dipping, spoke to a bee keeper and looked at birds in their natural habitat.

WOW DAY

We all dressed up as if we were in the jungle! We went into our school jungle and created dens and cooked outdoors. We made a delicious curry and ate it out in the wild!
