We have been learning how to find the perimeter of a shape. At first we found the perimeter of shapes within the classroom. Then we selected which tool we thought would measure the hall and the MUGA best and had a go at finding the perimeter. It was quite tricky!

Welcome back. Hope you all had a lovely half term.

This half term we will be looking at Haiku poetry in English followed by chronological reports. In maths we are learning how to find the perimeter of a shape. We will be revising division and looking at statistics ready for our UK versus Europe topic. In Science we will be looking at magnets and forces.

Swimming has now been cancelled until the end of the year. Therefore an extra PE lesson will be delivered. Please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in school.

Tuesday 7th February

Today is Internet Safety Day, we learnt all about keeping ourselves safe on the internet and how important it is to follow the rules. We found out how old we need to be to have some internet accounts such as snapchat, facebook and youtube. We were all very shocked to find out most sites required us to be at least 13.

As part of today we also found out what to do if we felt we were being cyber bullied.

We have made some posters to show how important we feel it is to be safe.

This week we had our last music lesson with Mrs Pearson until we are in Year 4 so we performed what we have learnt to Sapporo.

We have really enjoyed music on a Monday afternoon, we have learnt how to play the recorder, the chime bars and a ukulele.

Wednesday 25th January

Today was a very exciting day because Google expeditions came into school. We got to explore many places through the VR goggles such as the Great Barrier Reef and we went on an Ocean Safari. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

This week in Maths we have been learning about shapes and will continue to do so next week. We will then be revisiting addition using Base 10 and the expanded column method. In English we have learnt the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and have looked at the features of the text. Next week we will be innovating the text focusing on direct speech and prepositions. In our topic we have been learning about our skeletons and how they protect us. We thought of questions that we would like to find out about our skeletons and used the iPads to find the answers. In computing we have been learning to programme a sprite using Scratch. We will be continuing to create algorithms and debug when it is needed.

With spellings now being taught in class, our homework has now changed. Weekly spellings will no longer be sent home and instead we will send an English task home. Homework will still be sent home on a Thursday, to be returned the following Thursday.

Reading at home

Following a training course, we have been told that your child's reading record can be a key piece of evidence in helping decide if your child is a fluent reader or not. The comments that you put in the reading record can be extremely important. Below is an example which highlights the strengths and areas to work on for the child.

In addition to this, we have also been told that children should be keeping reading books for anywhere up to 2 weeks. This will enable your child to have a much deeper understanding of the book. Being able to read books is an important skill but if books are kept longer, children will know the texts better and therefore will be able to engage in discussion about the book. This is an important skill for any child to be Working at the Expected Standard in year 3. Please keep this in mind if your child's book is not changed as frequently.

Is your child past their Spell by Date?

Below are two lists of words that all year 3 children should already know. We are finding that lots of children cannot read and spell these words quickly or accurately enough. For your child to be at Working at the Expected Standard in year 3 they must be able to read, write and spell all of these words and more!! Please have a look at the lists and check with your child and help them learn them!

Tree planting!

On Tuesday 22nd November we will be going into the garden to plant a tree and discover the types of animals that live in our garden and look at their habitats. Please make sure your child is sent to school with appropriate clothing and footwear to change into. Thanks.

In our growth mindset lesson this week we had the flip card challenge. The children had to see if they could flip a card at the edge of the table and then catch it.

We found this tricky at first but after practise and thinking about our class top tips to help each other. We became much better at it. Some of us even had a go at flipping at catching 2 cards at once.

Keep up the hard work and having a positive growth mindset Kyoto!

Making of IRON MAN w/ makedo & cardboard - 鋼鐵人 以美度扣&紙版製作

The idea of making an ironman simply came from my 3 kids... I wanted to make them a toy suit for roleplay and halloween, but ended up making my own size model. In any case, they had fun during the month long period I spent making this model.

This week is Big Draw week in school and this year the focus is STEAM. We have lots of exciting activities planned.

Come and see our fantastic work on Friday 21st November. See you there!
