The Ancient Greeks

Our topic this half term is Ancient Greece.

We have been learning all about Greek myths in English with a focus on Theseus and the Minotaur.

We have created our own mythical monsters and we will be writing our myths over the next few weeks!

Topic

Our topic this half term has been Space. We have been learning about the movement of the Earth and the Moon.

We found out that the movement of these two things cause day and night, tides, the phases of the Moon and the seasons.

We also learned a bit about the sizes and distances of things in space. We were quite surprised when we found out that the Sun is so much bigger than the Earth!

We are looking forward to sharing what we have found out in our assembly on Friday 27th November. We hope to see you there!

Maths

Across year five we have been learning about multiplication and division in Maths.

We needed to find out about factors, multiples, rules of divisibility, mental methods and written methods for calculating.

In 5T we focused on using the expanded column method for multiplication and using repeated addition on a number line to help us understand division.

English:

This half term in English we have been learning about newspaper reports!

We started off my learning about the first men who landed on the Moon. We found out about how Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first men to walk on the surface of the Moon by memorising a newspaper report.

Then we changed this newspaper report so that it told of how the first people might walk on Mars.

Once we had a really good idea about what newspapers look like, we planned and wrote our own fantastic newspaper reports about life being discovered on Mars.

We have had a very busy start to Year 5. In our English lessons we have been doing plenty of work on The Borrowers including some drama. We have been investigating larger numbers in maths and looking at our rights and responsibilities in our topic work. In addition some of us have started to learn the steel pans and we have all enjoyed PE.
