Year 5 Staff
5PB class teachers: Miss Pratt (mornings) and Mrs McLane (afternoons)
5T class teacher: Miss Lund
Other staff we work with:
Miss Wilson (art and D.T. teacher)
We planted our own herbs to sell during Enterprise week. We designed pots for them, created baskets for them, designed "care for your herb" leaflets to be sold with them and created marketing posters. We were delighted that our herbs were popular and they all sold! Thank you for buying them, we hope you enjoy them.
In Science this half term, we are learning about life cycles of animals and plants. Please take some time in our school garden and look for insects and flowering plants. Try to notice them in each stage of their life cycle! Let Mrs McLane know what you find.
We had an excellent time at the M&S company archive. We split into groups and each group had a different decade - one group went right back to the 1900s! We investigated products, old photographs and artifacts to help us build up a picture of what life was like during our decade. We then presented our findings back to the class!
Did you know that in the 1900s, everything in M&S cost just 1 penny?
Did you know that during the 2nd World War, M&S gave all of its employees hard hats to wear to help protect them from the bombing.
Did you know that in the 1960s clothing was very bright and colourful?
Did you know that M&S was the first shop to stock fresh chicken?
We have participated in Healthy Schools week by looking at what constitutes a "balanced diet" and why this is healthy. Below are some photographs of us tasting a variety of healthy foods from the different food groups. We tried two of each food type and had to guess which was the supermarket's "value" brand and which was the "luxury" brand! We also had to use our maths skills to calculate the cost of the items.
In DT we had a competition to make an educational wire game. Here are pictures of some of them, including the winning game!
We had a fantastic trip to Robinwood. Have a look at our photos below.
This week 5PB wrote and recorded a song for Anti-Bullying Week. In the making of the song we all had different jobs: songwriters, typists, musicians, CD cover designers, and dancers! We are really proud of it, listen to it here:
Half Term 4
This half term we are looking at non-chronological reports - all to do with sea creatures!
Half Term 3
During this half term we will be studying Greek Myths. We have begun by learning Theseus and the Minotaur - below are some photos of us doing this!
Half Term 2
Since half term we have been doing our Talk for Writing unit. In this we have learnt a newspaper text off by heart and put actions to the words. The newspaper was about the first men on the moon - Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. We then used the skills we had learnt to create our own futuristic newspaper report about finding life on Mars!
In the lead up to Christmas we are studying The Nativity story and writing our own newspaper reports from 2015 years ago!
We have been using multi-link cubes to help us to understand volume. We have bee calculating volumes and investigating Cube Numbers.
We have been investigating are and perimeter and solving problems involving these.
We are looking at fractions this month - including adding, subtracting and multiplying them! We will be solving all sorts of problems!
This month we have been focusing on our calculation methods for multiplication and division. We are learning the standard column method for multiplication and the bus stop method for division. Some of us are learning long multiplication and long division too!
Our new topic for the new year is measurements. We have started by looking at capacity. We have used coloured water to estimate and measure the capacity of several objects (see photos below). We are also learning to convert between different units of measure.
In the run up to Christmas we are studying different types of angles and learning all about angle facts. We are also learning how to use a protractor accurately to draw and measure angles! In addition to this we are looking at 2D shapes and their properties - trapeziums, rhombuses, kites, parallelograms, pentagons, hexagons and many more!
Since half term we have been looking at multiplicative reasoning. This has included investigating factors, multiples, prime numbers and square numbers. We have also learnt how to do short multiplication and how to do the bus stop method.
19th October 2015 - Pontefract Trip
5PB went on a trip to Pontefract race course today. The children were able to learn a variety of maths skills and apply these to real life situations. They learnt about the difference between imperial and metric units, estimated weights and lengths, and measured the distance of the parade route. They also burnt of some energy by pretending to be horses and running the last furlong of the race track! The day ended with children watching the first race of the day - this was very exciting and each child picked a horse to cheer on!
