In Mrs Haddon's Maths Group we are learning about finding the perimeter and area of compound shapes. Below is a link that will help you with your learning.
For World Book Day in 5H we welcomed some children from 1P to read with. We really enjoyed sharing books with them.
After half term we welcome Mrs Gale back to the Year 5 team. She will be teaching in 5H and 5T on an afternoon. We are all happy to have her back!!
Congratulations to Diesel and Archie who played at half time during the Leeds Rhinos game on Friday 13th February. Who knows, maybe one day we will be watching them play for the Rhinos!!

In year 5 we are writing stories for the Chris Evans 500 words competition. We have read some of last years winner (they were very good). Many of us enjoyed 'No ideas George.' It was funny and original.

We are now writing our own stories. Who knows, one of us may end up meeting the Duchess of Cornwall at St James' Palace in the final. (That sounds like a good idea for a story!)

If you want to find out more about the competition, read some of last years finalists or get great tips for writing go to the website.

Mrs Haddon's Maths Group.

This week and next week we are learning about fractions. We have been finding equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. Next week we will be adding and subtraction fractions before problem solving with fractions. There are some great games on the internet - follow the link below.

Enjoying our new classroom

We have now moved into our new classroom. Here are some pictures and what we think.

'Our new classroom is bright and colourful. I love the yellow tables and orange chairs'

'The smart board is really cool. There are white board doors that slide to hide the screen'

'It is great going upstairs for art.'

Welcome back after the Christmas break.

Over the last 2 weeks we have been reading, and learning about, Greek Myths in English. In the last few days we have been creating our own mythical creatures and writing about them. Here is some of the fabulous descriptive language some of the children have used.

"Creeping through the darkness, he entered the cave and out of the corner of his eye he saw the creepiest monster ever."

Diesel

"My beast has flames for hair. He has razor sharp nails and teeth as sharp as knives"

Tallulah

"The menacing monkey has teeth as sharp as daggers and little pointed ears that can hear around the world. The furry wings upon it's back create a gust of wind whenever it flys."

Abi

In Mrs Haddon's maths group we have been creating algebraic equations to find the nth number in a number sequence.

Try some of these at home

3, 5, 7, 9, 11,...

5, 8, 11, 14, 17.....

11, 21, 31, 41, 51....

9,13, 17, 21, 25.....

What would the next 3 terms be?

What would the nth term be?

What would the 10th term, 20th term and 50th term be?

Have a look at Fibbonacci number sequence. Can you see the pattern? Why is this pattern so significant?

Next week, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning, groups of Year 5 children will be singing Christmas songs in Leeds City Centre at the Royal Bank of Scotland .

Anti- Bullying Week at Sharp Lane.

This week has been anti-bullying week.

These are some of the things children have said during our discussions.

"If you have been bullied go to a teacher or your parents so they can sort it out." Molly

"There are different types of bullying - homophobic, physical, verbal and emotional." Rubie

"When someone is bullied they feel worthless and they feel like they have nobody to help them." Tallulah

"I think bullying is mean. You would not like it if it happened to you." Teide

On Thursday 5H went, with year 5 and 6, to St Mary's Church in Middleton for a service of rememberance for all those who lost their lives in war. As part of our art project we made a poppy wreath. We read poems, sang songs and laid the wreath in church. It was a memorable afternoon for all!
