Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 5, 1901. When he was four years old his parents, Elias and Flora, moved the family to a farm in Marceline, Missouri. Walt enjoyed living on the farm with his three older brothers (Herbert, Raymond, and Roy) and his younger sister (Ruth). When Walt was a teenager his family moved to the city of Chicago. Walt took classes at the Chicago Art Institute and drew for the school newspaper. When he was sixteen, Walt decided he wanted to help fight in World War I. Since he was still too young to join the army, he dropped out of school and joined the Red Cross. He spent the next year driving ambulances for the Red Cross in France.
Disney returned from the war ready to begin his career as an artist. Walt wanted to make his own animation cartoons. He started his own company called Laugh-O-Gram. Although the cartoons were popular, the business didn't make enough money and Walt had to declare bankruptcy.
One failure was not going stop Disney, in 1923, he moved to Hollywood, California and opened a new business called Disney Brothers' Studio. The business was a success. However, Universal Studios poached all of Disney's animators except for one.
Once again, Walt had to start over. This time he created a new character named Mickey Mouse. He created the first animated film to have sound. It was called Steamboat Willie and starred Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The film was a great success. Disney continued to work, creating new characters such as Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto.
In 1932, Disney decided he wanted to make a full-length animated film called Snow White. People thought he was crazy for trying to make a cartoon that long. It took five years to complete the film which was finally released in 1937. The film was a huge box office success becoming the top film of 1938.
More Movies and Television
Disney used the money from Snow White to build a movie studio and to produce more animated movies including Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan. After the war, Disney began to produce live action films in addition to animated films. His first big live action film was Treasure Island.
Always coming up with new ideas, Disney had the idea to create a theme park with rides and entertainment based on his movies. Disneyland opened in 1955. It cost $17 million to build. The park was a huge success and is still one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. Disney would later have the idea to build an even larger park in Florida called Walt Disney World. He worked on the plans, but died before the park opened in 1971.
Death and Legacy
Disney died on December 15, 1966 from lung cancer. His legacy lives on to this day. His movies and theme parks are still enjoyed by millions of people each year. His company continues to produce wonderful movies and entertainment every year.

This week in Year 4 we have been starting to look at the script for our Aladdin performance and learning our lines. We need to make sure we carry on learning these at home. Also we have started to learn our WAGOLL for our topic on argument texts, Should Daleks be allowed to live on earth?
Should Daleks be allowed to live on Earth?
Gdyby Dalekowie wolno żyć na Ziemi?
Since the arrival of the Daleks on this planet, there has been much discussion about whether or not they should be allowed to live on Earth. This issue is of vital importance because the Daleks have asked the world’s parliaments if they can stay.
The Doctor, the famous Time Lord, has argued that the Daleks might be allowed to stay because they could be used as a force for good. The doctor has suggested that by changing the Dalek’s basic programming, a new breed could be created. There are several reasons why this might be beneficial. First, they would act as ideal defenders in any intergalactic battle. Furthermore, the Dalek’s are tireless workers and totally fearless. This means that they might be prepared to work in areas that are dangerous. Moreover, The Doctor argues that their skill in technology would help the Earth considerably.
On the other hand, the large majority of people on planet Earth do not believe that the Daleks should be allowed to stay. First of all, they point to the fact that when Daleks have previously visited, they have attempted to exterminate all other life forms. Furthermore, they add that these cyborgs from planet Skaro have been waging war around the galaxy. Additionally, the Daleks are known to have no compassion and only feel hate.
Having considered the arguments from both sides, we believe that the Daleks should not be allowed to stay on Earth as the risk is too great. While The Doctor is usually right and has saved the galaxy on many occasions, we have concluded that perhaps he has been influenced in some way by these evil creatures!

We are learning our water cycle WAGOLL in class.
The Water Cycle
The Water Cycle is a natural system in our environment. It has no beginning and no end. Water goes round in a circle between the sea, air and the ground.
When the sun shines on the sea, warm air rises and forms water vapour. This is called evaporation.
The water vapour in the air squeezes together into lots of tiny drops of water so small that we cannot see them. The tiny droplets bump into each other forming bigger drops that we can see as a cloud.
When the drops are big and heavy they fall as rain, hail, sleet or snow. This is called precipitation.
This falls onto the land and into the rivers. The rivers flow into the sea and everything starts again.

Why dragons are extinct
It is a well-known fact that, up until a few hundred years ago, dragons roamed England terrorising villages with their fiery breath and capturing maidens. So why are they now extinct?
Experts think that the main reason is the rise of football. Because so many England fans started wearing the colours of St George, the dragons fled to remote moorlands.
Unfortunately, the very cold weather of the moorlands meant that the dragons' favourite green foods (gooseberries, cabbage and spinach) refused to grow. These plants were not only vital for the dragons' health but also for their colour which provided camouflage in the woods. Slowly, the green dragons turned purple, caused by eating too much heather.
It is this colour change that led to their final extinction. Once the heather had died away in the autumn, the dragons could no longer hide because their purple scales made them easily visible. This enabled local bounty hunters to hunt and destroy them.
So that is why the only dragons you see in England today are in pictures, books or films.
Year Four have had a busy week. Thank you to all the parents who could attend our reading workshops, the children loved having visitors and sharing their guided reading work. The children also had chance to meet the fantastic author and illustrator Chris Mould on Tuesday and really enjoyed his presentation. Year Four have also made preparations for the Harvest Festival assembly and have wonderfully decorated harvest donation boxes.
We are learning our newspaper WAGOLL. Let's learn it at home as well.
Yesterday, after a long, hard day’s work in the woods cutting trees, I was about to set off home when I heard a young girl’s cry for help. Worried for her safety, I threw down the heavy log which was cradled in my arms. Axe in hand I raced to the little cottage where the cries came from. Kicking down the door I was surprised to see a vicious wolf wearing an old woman’s nightgown. Without thinking I quickly charged towards the hideous wolf just as he was about to sink his sharp teeth into an innocent girl wearing a red, hooded cape. As I was about to raise my axe I caught a glimpse of his ferocious, evil eyes staring at me. He took a swipe at me with his huge, white claws. Ducking under his claws I swung my trusty axe and caught him in the leg, with one fell swoop he landed heavily on the wooden floor and quick as a flash I pulled out rope from my bag and tied him up tightly. Hearing a creak I turned round to see the wooden cupboard door opening. A frail old woman slowly stepped out and threw her arms around me. They were so grateful that I had saved them from the mean wolf that they made me a basket full of chocolate muffins. I was so pleased that no harm had come to them and I could help. It was really lucky that I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I set off home whistling a merry tune.
