Today was Sharp Lane Sports Day......without the sports! Due to the terrible British weather our races have been postponed until next week. However, we all still managed to come to school in our brightest sports and carnival gear to take part in lots of different activities. We were lucky enough to learn some new football skills, try out some story yoga, make pasta necklaces and design our own sports t-shirts. We all had a fantastic day and despite the rain it was still good fun!

Thursday 23rd June 2016

A massive thank you to everyone who came to support us this afternoon during our Enterprise! We enjoyed creating a 'grow your own courgette' kit and even included some tasty ideas for you to try at home. We had a great time showing you all our Maypole dancing that we had been working hard on.

Friday 17th June 2016

A great thanks to all you dads who came to take part in some activities with the children. There were some fantastic towers during our spaghetti and marshmallow competition and some great pirate songs using a variety of musical instruments. The children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their current learning with you all.

This week in Maths we have been completing a carousel of activities. We have looked at problem solving which involved finding the difference and working out how many sheep and hens were on a farm. We also looked more closely at 3D shapes and tried to explain why certain structures were stable or not. We also practised using jugs to measure out water for our minibeasts and answer questions based on comparisons of these.

We have had a very busy week this week!

We started the week by learning about the Buddhist festival Vesak which celebrates the life of the Buddha. We compared this celebration to our celebrations on our birthdays. We then looked at meditation and had a go ourselves. We finished the session by colouring in some mindfulness pictures of minibeasts while listening to relaxing music.

Then on Tuesday we continued with our Maypole dancing, which we hope to show you all later in the term. We all enjoyed the different dances, especially as we got to practise with 2LM.

On Wednesday afternoon we were lucky enough to see the 'Woodwind Trio' perform during our music lesson. They played lots of tunes we recognised but we couldn't remember what all of them were called. They helped fill in these gaps and also taught us the names of some new instruments.

Then finally on Thursday afternoon we went down to the garden to hunt for minibeasts. We made a tally chart to show which habitats we found them in then followed this up in class with food chains for some of our favourite minibeasts!

This morning we had a great time doing more rugby with our Leeds Rhinos coach. We learned how to kick the ball using the 'grubber kick'. We then got into three teams and had to compete against each other to get the most points for kicking the ball correctly. We even managed to do our practise on the field because it was so sunny!

Today we went on a minibus to Tropical World! When we arrived we went through the butterfly house. The butterflies were very friendly and some landed on our clothes! Next we went in the bird room where there were lots of colourful birds. We enjoyed spending our money in the gift shop so we could take home a memento from the day. We are looking forward to telling you all about our trip in our class assembly on Friday.

Wednesday 20th April 2016

Today we were lucky enough with the weather to go outside to do our Maths learning. We started by using hula hoops, bean bags and balls to complete division problems. We then moved onto using chalk and blank number lines to complete division by using repeated subtraction.

It's British Science Week! This year the theme is all about space. To take part, Year 2 found out just what it would take to be a good astronaut. We talked about the dexterity needed as well as the physical fitness required. We had a go at completing different challenges wearing different types of gloves to see how much harder simple activities can become. After this we put our results into a bar chart and it was clear to see that oven gloves were the hardest to use!

We did this by using role play to put ourselves in the shoes of firefighters, Samuel Pepys, ordinary people and the baker  at the moments just after the fire started. We then used our ideas to write a report on the Great Fire of London.

To do this some children wore yellow jackets and were not allowed to play or eat with those not wearing them. We then had a discussion about how this made both sides feel and began to link our experience to Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech.
